An ancient Greek and Roman city, Avignon became in 1229 the City of the Popes, A major historical event, this was to be the starting point of a remarkable transformation. The 'Festival d'Avignon' Created in 1947 by Jean Vilar, the Festival d'Avignon has become the first show in the world for staged shows and plays. It generally takes place between July 10 and August 2.
A festival of creation, its program revolves around the yearly actuality of theatre, dance and music and welcomes around 120 000 spectators.
A first 'rough' program is available from March 15, whilst the final schedule comes out on May 10.
