The Avignon ramparts As you approach the centre of Avignon, its 14th century ramparts surrounding the city are a truly arresting site. Featuring 39 towers and seven main gates, they are approximately 4 kilometres in length. |

Antique remains Avignon is an ancient Roman city and was originally an important trading hub, at the crossroads of major commercial roads. You can still visit Roman remains dating back to the first century AD. |

The Hôtel des Monnaies Located directly opposite the main entrance of the Palais des Papes, it was built in 1619 in the baroque Italian style. Nowadays it is the Olivier Messiaen music conservatory, and houses the administrative arm of the Avignon Festival Off. |

The Theatre - opera The first theatre, built in 1825 on the Place de l'Horloge, was destroyed by a fire in 1846 and replaced by the current building (1846-1847). |
